ELLON United returned emptyhanded following a 1-0 defeat by Banks o’ Dee on Saturday.
The visitors once again had the chance to take an early lead but were unable to find the target, and to make matters worse, when they did hit the net in the 12th minute their effort was chalked off, apparently for offside.
They were made to pay the price for their failure to punish their opponents early on when they conceded a soft goal midway through the first half.
Fortunately for Ellon, the home side were equally weak in front of goal which kept them in the match but the visitors’ late push failed to produce an equaliser.
United came close to opening the scoring in the fifth minute with Paul Leahy’s volley from a Darren Bailey corner flying just wide of the target. A neat turn by Jack almost had the Ellon defence in trouble, but Mark Lawson was quickly across to clear the danger. Five minutes later and United had the ball in the net when the home defence was unable to force the ball clear, only for the goal to be disallowed.
Matty Bremner shot over in the 21st minute and it was Banks’ Dee who took the lead four minutes later. Jack was given too much room to move forward and his mishit effort appeared to deceive Callum Steer and the ball landed in the bottom corner.
The home side were then awarded a free kick in a dangerous position, but this time Ellon defended the set piece well and the ball was eventually cleared.
United found themselves on the back foot for the opening twenty minutes of the second half. It was Dee’s turn to show their lack of fire power, passing up a couple of good chances which kept United in contention.
Willie Mathers and Chris Eadie replaced Lenny Johnson and Matty Bremner for the last half hour. However, the equaliser failed to materialise, although Chris Allsop did come close with a late shot.
