UNITED were unable to get their new year off to a winning start when they went down 1-0 to FC Stoneywood at the Meadows last weekend. With little to choose between the teams, United’s lack of firepower cost them when the visitors struck out of nothing mid way through the second half. With United reduced to fourteen players for the day, they were fortunate to be able to call on Jack Lendrum, Ryan Shand and Mark Stephen from Meadows Under 16s.
The blustery conditions affected the game, with United facing the wind in the first half. Stoneywood threatened, with McKechnie breaking out wide and sending in a tempting cross which was headed wide. United responded with Walker laying off the ball to Ralton, whose shot flew wide. The Ellon defence were put under real pressure through a series of corners which were driven in by McKechnie, but they coped well and the ball was finally cleared.
United almost snatched the lead in the 24th minute through McKinnon, but his header drifted just beyond the far post. Buchanan came to United’s rescue with an excellent save eight minutes before the interval when he somehow managed to turn away a header.
Neither side looked like breaking the deadlock in the second period, and it was United who were enjoying their best spell when Stoneywood were awarded a free kick in the 68th minute. The home defence were deceived by the ball getting caught in the wind, and it fell to Farmer, who hooked it over his head, into the net.
As United looked to get back on terms, their final pass let them down too often, and their finishing lacked the composure to cause keeper Goodbrand real problems. Ellon were awarded several late game free kicks, but again they failed to put Stoneywood under pressure.
