Last gasp Ellon grab all three points

An injury time goal saw Ellon United escape from Spain Park with a fine 2 - 1 win over a strong Banks o` Dee outfit last Saturday to collect another three league points.

The result came at a cost with several casualties on both sides. United were forced into three substitutions due to injuries and finished with several walking wounded whilst Banks o` Dee had to play out the closing stages with ten men when Reid had to be carried off after they had used all their subs.

anks o` Dee opened on the front foot and forced a corner in the 1st minute. The home side worked a short corner and were awarded a soft free kick with Ross Buchanan taking no chances and turning the ball behind for a corner which was dealt with by the United defence. Dee were shocked in the 9th minute. Blair Johnston picked up a through ball and moved forward, winning through in a challenge with the home side looked for a free kick.. The Spain Park side lost their concentration and United took full advantage with Lewis Forbes putting the visitors ahead.

Jamie McKinnon received a yellow card when he got entangled with Dee`s McRae in a race to reach a through ball. Greig shot wide in the 16th minute then the home side almost gifted United a second goal. Ross Forsyth`s pass released Chris Craib on the left and when his cross was missed by a Dee defender it fell to Greg Simpson whose snatched effort slipped just wide of the post. A spell of head tennis in the United box saw the ball eventually fall to Greig who shot wide to keep Ellon 1 - 0 ahead at the interval.

United suffered their first injury blow when Ross Forsyth was forced off to be replaced by Keith Walker to play up front with Craig Morrison dropping into a deeper roll. Three minutes later Mark Lawson met a free kick from Michael Ralton but his header went over. United had to make another change with Calum Annand replacing Jamie McKinnon. Michael Ralton moved to a central rolee with Calum Annand taking over on the right hand side of the defence.

ee broke in the 63rd minute but sub Whelan shot wide. The home side won a free kick two minutes later and this time made no mistake with a fine strike from Hunter finding the postage stamp corner. Resolute defending by United saw two shots blocked before Ross Buchanan finally came to the rescue with a great point blank save. United had to make their final substitution in the 74th minute with Lenny Johnson coming on up front as Lewis Forbes hobbled off.

United were also forced to play the closing stages with several walking wounded. An 87th minute shot from Stewart was saved by Ross Buchanan at the expense of a corner. United responded with Craig Morrison getting on the end of a cross from Greg Simpson only to see his header fly well over. Ellon grabbed the lead in the first minute of stoppage time. Craig Morrison beat his marker to a free kick from Michael Ralton and headed the ball back to Keith Walker who moved in to fire home. There was still time for Ross Buchanan to deny Dee in the 93rd minute before United closed out the remaining stoppage time.

nited face another stiff challenge next Saturday when Dyce are their visitors to The Meadows on league business, kick off 2:00pm, and Craig Stewart will be hoping that his injury list will have cleared up.
