The Ellon Meadows Sports Centre has teamed up with a local football fan to offer the Ellon community a competitive league which started earlier this month.
The league is based on seven sided games held on Tuesday nights within the meadows complex. Providing referees, weekly updates and prizes the league will offer football fans in the town and surrounding areas something fresh and initiative.
The league was brought about by the desire from former Ellon Academy pupil Marc Simpson to see a football league closer to Ellon instead of commuting to Aberdeen to take part in such a league.
Marc contacted Ellon Meadows Sports Centre and following constructive talks went about forming the league. He was quick to thank the sports centre for the support during the start-up phase of the league,
He said: “Ellon Meadows have given me the opportunity to try and get a league up and running and without their support it would be an unenviable task.”
The league has already attracted a number of interested parties but Marc would like to grow it further to an extended audience.
He added: “We have two leagues of six teams but are always looking for new teams.”
Ellon Meadows Sports Centre, who have backed the project from the start, believe the town should be supporting the league.
Sports centre manager Shona Fraser said: “We are more than happy to show support to ideas such as Marc Simpson and his football league and believe such projects have wider benefit to the community.”
Competition is now well under way and the league is looking for the community and its businesses to help maintain its early success to ensure a long-term future for the new venture.
The first sponsor of the league is Main Cabs.
