The result meant Thistle required two points from their remaining two games to send United down into the First Division and with a 3-2 win over Banchory St Ternan on Tuesday, they did just that.

Unavailability of players left United short of numbers for their final fixture and they were fortunate to be helped out by Auchnagatt Barons trio Scott Cruickshank, Greg Matthews and Ryan Moynihan. A downpour just before United arrived at the ground put the fixture in doubt but brushing and forking by the Inverness lads and a delay in the kick off allowed the game to go on.

With nine minutes gone United gave away a free kick on the edge of their box but the Referee pointed to the spot. Robin Dunbar came to the visitors rescue diving full length to his left to smother the spot kick. The opening goal was only delayed, however, and three minutes later a low clearance was knocked straight back into the Ellon box with the ball falling to Fraser to open the scoring. United were unable to force the ball home on several occasions and at the same time they were too guilty of being pushed around by their more experienced opponents putting themselves in danger.

A goalmouth scramble in the 41st minute looked to have seen another United chance go begging but a united striker was felled in the process giving the visitors a penalty which was converted by Calum Tremaine. On the stroke of half time an Ellon move ended with Calum Tremaine finding Dean McDonald whose shot found the far corner to give United a 2 – 1 lead at the interval.

United’s nasty habit of giving away early goals after the break came back to haunt them again. They conceded a corner within two minutes of the restart with defender Duncan powering home a header off the cross. United slackness was punished in the 79th minute when they lost possession in midfield allowing Inverness to break forward with Mackenzie curling his shot into the top corner.
