ELLON United dropped two points for the second week running when they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Hall Russell United on Saturday.
With neither side able to test their opposing keeper to any great extent, the match had a scoreless draw written all over it, but the home side should really have been able to cash in on some of the pressure they enjoyed from countless corners.
Ellon failed to convert several tempting crosses in the opening half hour and were caught out in the 29th minute.
They passed up the chance to score from a corner and with Russells breaking quickly, the visitors had the opportunity to make better used of a three-to-two man advantage but for Matty Bremner’s intervention.
Russells were awarded a free kick on their left and from the cross, their number 10 struck the post but was clearly offside and play was pulled up for the assistant’s flag. Neither side was able to dominate as the half came to a close.
The second half continued in the same way with Ellon forcing numerous corners without being able to apply the finishing touch, and Hall Russells knocking the ball forward early at every opportunity only to be denied by the home defence.
A slick move up Ellon’s right put the visitors under pressure, but they defended the final cross well at the back post at the expense of another corner.
Ellon made a double change in the 70th minute with Fraser Tait and Darren Bailey coming on for Josh Lamberty and Lenny Johnson, but the changes made no great difference.
The home side made their final change in the 80th minute with Jonathon Millsom replacing the injured Ryan Stewaert but just as in the first half, the game faded into stoppage time with neither side a worthy winner.
Ellon United: Steer, Bremner, Johnston, Lamberty (Tait), Allsop, Lawson, Stewart (Millsom), Reid, Johnson (Bailey), Morrice.
Ellon are at home again on Saturday when Banchory St Ternan visit the Meadows. The kick-off is at 2pm.
