Ellon United kept the pressure on league leaders Sunnybank with a convincing 4-0 win away to Cruden Bay at the weekend, keeping their second clean sheet in a row.
Despite facing the horrible wet and windy conditions it was United who dominated the opening play with Cruden Bay keeper Fraser by far the busier by far.
However the home side did have a corner which was caught by the wind and glanced off Morgan Cook`s bar before United had a goal chalked off .
Ellon did manage to break the deadlock in 32nd minute.
Cruden Bay had no answer to an incisive break with Kevin Anderson running on to Neil Main’s penetrating through ball and outpacing the home defence to square for James Bain to finish off.
Bain added his second eight minutes after the interval when Lenny Johnson and Dean McDonald linked up neatly to set up the striker.
Two goals in a five minute spell ended the game as a contest.
Neill Irvine’s header from a Stuart Massie corner in the 59th minute put United 3 – 0 ahead then in the 64th minute a wicked in-swinging free kick from Chris Craib was missed by everyone but found the net at the far post.
United were unable to add to their goal tally but were obviously happy to take home three points in such conditions.
United will now travel to Hillhead next Saturday to face Aberdeen University in a 1 o’ clock kick-off.
The league hopefuls know they will face much stiffer opposition than they did during their last game against the students in the Grill League Cup when many of the University team were still on holiday.
A win for United will see them regain the top spot , leapfrogging Sunnybank who will be away on cup business.
League leaders Sunnybank recorded a 2-0 win over the students last weekend.
