United pile on the goals

Formartine United kept up their title challenge with an emphatic 5-1 home win over Huntly on Saturday.

In-form Neil Gauld grabbed two within the pace of a couple of minutes as United took their haul of league goals this season to 121.

The hosts produced a disciplined professional performance that emphasised the gulf in class between a side emerging from the doldrums and one with the bit between its teeth in serious contention in the final stages of the title race.

Not to put too fine a point on it, Formartine were in control from start to finish. They began on the offensive and hit Huntly with organised pace and aggression that the Christie Park men struggled not to match but simply to cope with.

Gauld opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when indecision between Lawson and the keeper allowed the marksman to nip in and tuck the ball away.

A minute later it was 2-0 when he outstripped to visiting defence to fire home an unstoppable driver.

The game was virtually over when United added a third in the 31st minute.

Dingwall got on the end of a Barbour cross to find the net with a low drive at the back post.

Huntly pulled one back immediately when Duncan netted from the edge of the box.

Formartine forged 4-1 ahead in the 51st minute. Wood picked up a Crawford free kick to hammer a drive high into the net.

The scoring was completed with around 20 minutes left via an own goal.

Lawson, attempting a block, deflected a Wood effort past his own keeper.
