Formartine United swept Inverurie Locos aside 4-0 in Saturday’s derby at North Lodge Park.

United were three up at the interval through a Scott Barbour double and a Cammy Keith strike and a further Keith goal added to the visitors’ misery.

Our finishing was excellent and our front three again looked very dangerous

The emphatic win keeps the Pitmedden side on the tails of Brora Rangers and Cove Rangers, who face Formartine in the Scottish Cup this Saturday.

Formartine took the lead in the sixth minute when Rodger picked out Barbour and he slotted home from close range.

Locos suffered a blow when veteran Martin Bavidge suffered a hamstring injury and had to be replaced.

Mathieson made a good save when a free kick was headed on and then in 21 minutes ex-Red and Blacks favourite Neil Gauld beat the offside trap and Kieran Adams to force Mathieson into another save.

But Formartine went two ahead in the 24th minute when a long ball out of defence by defender Johnny Crawford saw his opposite number Adams block the pace of the ball. All he did was set it up for the deadly Keith to finish it off.

Two minutes later it was effectively game over, Barbour reading the offside trap again on a Rodger pass and hammering home with his left foot.

There were chances for Locos, Gordon Forsyth going close with a header, McCabe foiled by Reid when one-on-one with him and Reid watched a Mitchell swerving shot go narrowly past his upright.

However, United made it four in the 52nd minute and again it was Keith on target. The marksman latched on to a Lawson lob over the defence, drew Mathieson and coolly netted his second.

Manager Kris Hunter said: “I’m delighted with the performance, our finishing was excellent and our front three again looked very dangerous.

“Neil Gauld was unlucky not to score as well. The front three did well in the 5-0 win at Forres last Saturday and they’ve carried good form into this game.”
