AN Ellon Olympian is to be inducted to Edinburgh University’s Sports Hall of Fame, joining Chris Paterson, a former Scottish rugby hero, fellow Olympian and gold medal winner Sir Chris Hoy and Eric Liddell from the 1924 games.
Ali McGregor, who kept goal at the Beijing Olympics for the Great Britain and Ireland team, admitted to being humbled by the honour.
He said: “When I found out about being inducted into the hall of fame I was just overwhelmed, it’s an amazing honour, especially when you see just who else is there.”
“I hope that the success of my sports career was a way of thanking the University for everything,”
added Ali, who is currently deputy headteacher at Longdon Hall, a new school for pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
The former Ellon Academy pupil and player with Ellon Gordon Hockey helped set up the new school last September is justly proud of the achievement.
‘’Most of all I enjoy supporting pupils to work through difficulties and celebrating success with them,” said Ali, who continues to make his home town proud of his dedication to sport and bringing it to others who have been less fortunate than him.
