North-east rider Jessica Berrie who has won a top award at a local equestrian centre.

Jessica Berrie, 11, was named “2013 Rider of the Year” at the Ladymire centre in Ellon. The honour was in recognition of her personal development and achievements.

Jessica, who has ridden at the centre for the past four years, received the trophy at a recent showjumping event at Ladymire, sponsored by Marinetronix Ltd, of Aberdeen.

Jessica was on top form, riding a number of different ponies and horses - winning an impressive five of the 10 trophies available throughout the day.

She also receives a training scholarship, which covers her riding and training both on and off centre for the next 12 months.

In addition, she will have the opportunity to ride at equestrian events and venues throughout Scotland, including qualifiers to some of the UK’s top events.

The centre’s joint proprietor Naomi Watson said; “We are delighted to offer our support to Jessica. She is a fantastic young person who is showing great skill and technique as a rider.

“She has continued to improve over the past 12 months, and shows a great natural affinaty and love of horses. There are many young riders at the centre who are developing extremely well.

“We decided to introduce the “Rider of the Year” award to encourage and support these aspiring young riders. This yearly award can only ever be received once by any rider, ensuring a new rider is recognised every year.

“The aim is to give an initial platform from which riders can progress to perhaps riding and competing nationally.”

The recent show at the centre saw riders of all ages competing. The junior points championship was won by Jessica Berrie, while the senior championship was won by Andrea Stubbs.
