Hermes 1 - 0 Ellon United

Although this will go down as a loss for Ellon United, the result might have been very different had the visitors taken their chances.

With only two minutes gone a quickly taken Hermes free kick gave Hamilton an opening but he put his shot wide. Three minutes later the home defence were caught out but Chris Craib ran clear only to knock the ball beyond the far post. It was all Ellon at this stage with Ross Forsyth shooting over then Greg Simpson twice breaking out wide and firing over low crosses which unfortunately flew straight across the goal.

Macklin thought he had put Hermes in front but play was pulled back for a free kick. A double save from keeper Sweeney kept United at bay then Chris Craib met a cross from Greg Simpson only to see his header go over the bar. Three minutes before the break Ross Forsyth was hauled back as he threatened to break clear with Greg Simpson`s shot from the resulting free kick went behind for a corner.

It was a different looking Hermes who opened the second half. Ross Buchanan was forced into a fine save from Medle before Robertson shot wide. The home side won a free kick with central defender Campbell meeting the cross but unable to direct his header on target. United`s Steve Gunn hobbled off midway through the second period to be replaced by Lenny Johnson.

Meddle put the home side ahead in the 73rd minute, although United almost equalised within four minutes when Sweeney was unable to cut out a free kick from Greg Simpson. However, Jamie McKinnon just failed to get his head to the ball at the back post with the goal gaping.

Ross Buchanan dived full stretch to turn a shot from sub Wyness round the post. Duncan Chalmers came on up front to replace defender Calum Annand as United tried to get back level and he almost set up the equaliser when he cut the ball back to Greg Simpson who moved inside only to see his effort go beyond the far post.
