Ellon Gordon progressed to the final of the most prestigious competition in the Grades when they were given a walkover by Arrowdawn Gordonians who were unable to raise a team for the semi - final of the Aberdeenshire Cup on Sunday.
In the Saturday game at Countesswells the Ellon visitors batted first, setting the home side the stiff target of 192 to win.
This was mainly due to a superb unbeaten 75 from veteran Jonny Barrett, ably supported by opener Stuart Davies who scored 36, enabling the Gordon Park side to reach 191 for the loss of eight wickets.
The home response was curtailed by some fine bowling from Ross Wade who took two for a mere four runs, while captain Webb who weighed in with a return of two for 21 to help bowl out Gordonians for 69.
Up at Methlick the Lairds men’s last opportunity of keeping themselves in the Grade 2 promotion race disappeared after being bowled out for 69, this despite a gutsy 41 from skipper Steve Murphy.
A total that proved to be too little to defend, as Stoneywood - Dyce - Queens Cross cruised to victory by four wickets, even if they had to rely on former Scotland and Aberdeenshire player Jan Stander who was still at the crease after a thoughtful 23 when they passed the home score.
The clash of 2nd Ellon Gordon and its Methlick counterparts proved to be a damp squib in what was a non - counter in Grade 4 at the Gordon Park.
The home side were bowled out for 51, leaving the MCC the easiest of targets before setting off for the club’s short tour of Holland.
