ELLON saved the best for last at the Meadows on Saturday when they turned in an impressive performance to beat Caley Division 1 runners up Caithness 22 - 20, handing themselves a great opportunity to avoid relegation.
The win takes the Meadows men into third place above Hillfoots and Highland who are both relegated, leaving Ellon with a last-ditch chance in a play-off between the winners of Caley Division 2 North and Caley Division 2 Midlands.
There was no disguising the relief of interim head coach Michael Cox who hailed the victory as a great achievement. “I am really proud of the effort the team put into the game. It was a good game played in perfect conditions. I just wish we could have played all our games on such a good pitch. Scoring four tries was just great. I believe we will now go on to survive in Caley Division 1, which has been an objective for a number of weeks,” said Cox.
The win was all the more gratifying for Ellon as they had to battle back from 14-5 down. Tries from Keiron Dalgarno, Mark Ilyine, Jack Calvert and Conor Slavin made it a day to celebrate for the young Ellon team.
