Ellon Gordon pushed Cults - Artisans - St Ronald all the way in absorbing, competitive game at Allan Park where they came within 32 runs of the home total of 174 for the loss of eight wickets.
Cults were largely indebted to an inspired knock of 98 from Graham Grover, while Ellon’s Les Bortslap scarcely deserved to be on the losing side after taking six wickets for 33, being near unplayable in what was a splendid spell of bowling.
Had Bortslap managed to claim the wicket of the in-form Grover at an earlier stage in the home innings, Ellon would certainly have cruised to victory, especially as Brian Veldsman and Richard Greenfield were in great nick when Ellon’s turn to bat came.
Opener Veldsman was in sparkling form, scoring 42, setting the tone for the rest of the visiting batsmen, though only Greenfield rose to the challenge with a gutsy 37, taking his side to within touching distance of the home total.
The defeat keeps the Gordon Park side in the bottom four of Grade 1, making Saturday’s away game to ACE Mannofield a must win game if they are to reach the safety of mid-table by the end of a season badly affected by the weather.
The rains of Friday and again on Saturday led to the postponement of the top of the table clash Grade 2 match between Methlick and Inverurie Don Valley at Lairds, while Kemnay - Kintore who are also in the promotion mix were not able to complete its game against lowly Banchory.
2nd Methlick were denied a game after 2nd Stonehaven scratched, handing the Lairds team a walk over, while 2nd Ellon also pulled out of its game at home to Turriff.
