ANOTHER weekend of inactivity has left Ellon Rugby Club facing a back log of fixtures which could see the Meadows club playing games deep into the spring.
“Should the cold snap not lift soon we will be playing during the cricket season,” said an exasperated Mike Avis the club’s head coach.
Ellon last played a match on November 20 and were due at Garnock to play a National Shield game last weekend, but are now faced with the decision of making this Saturday’s match at the same venue in National League 1 a double header.
“On the face of it that would seem like a straight forward issue, though much depends on whether or not Garnock have commitments to corporate hospitality with sponsors. It’s vital we all keep our sponsors sweet, cancelling lunches is not in our mutual interests,” said club president Steve Park.
In the meantime Avis has the responsibility of keeping the players fit and interested as the freeze goes on.
“I can only hope we get a game this weekend. The forecast is not bad for the week, but we’ve been told that before. All we need is a dramatic thaw, which could be even worse for us. It’s most frustrating,” said Avis.
