Newburgh triumph in HCC Final

The House of Commons Cup is an inter-club knock-out competition played between the 9 member clubs of the Buchan Seniors Golf Association. Newburgh’s Seniors reached the 2010 Final, but lost narrowly to Inverurie at Inverallochy. This season, Newburgh again reached the Final and faced the prospect of playing Inverallochy’s Seniors on their home course.

Team Captain Warrender was unable to attend, but he had carefully set out his team well in advance. The match did not go well in the early stages, as pairs one and three suffered heavy losses. Between them, however, pair two - Smith and Cooper - hung on to an early lead to win by one hole. Pair four, Thomson and Cattanach, came in with a good win and pair five, Wood and Murray, did likewise to put Newburgh 3-2 ahead with one match still on the course. Stewart and Turnbull in match six were one down at the 17th hole, but John Stewart won that hole to take his team up the 18th hole needing a half for victory. The Final came down to 2 long putts from the back of the 18th green. John Turnbull’s putt down a steep slope ran within 6 inches from the hole to get his par 4. When his Inverallochy opponent did the same, John’s half at the final hole clinched the match and the HCC for Newburgh.

Newburgh last won the trophy in 1998. Bobby Smith, veteran of that victory, played his part: at 87, the oldest player in the Final!
