Cricket made its seasonal debut last weekend with a number of games in the four Aberdeenshire Grades being called off, mainly due to waterlogged pitches in the area.

Ellon Gordon were, however, able to play its Grade 1 match at the Aberdeen Links where they gave champions Bon Accord a run for their money in a closely fought affair.

Methlick were less lucky as both its first and second team games against Kemnay - Kintore were called off without a ball being bowled at either Kemnay and the Lairds.

Ellon Gordon batted first in Aberdeen, but struggled to get the ball off the square, although Stuart Davies had less difficulty than most of his batting colleagues, digging in to score a well constructed 58.

Davies had some support in the form of captain Scott White who weighed in with a supportive 23.

Ellon’s total of 152 all out never looked to be enough, especially as Mizra(52) and Awan(46) displayed encouraging early season form, only to be let down by the later order batsmen in the Aberdeen side.

In the event Bon Accord struggled over the line, losing six batsmen in the process to win by a four wickets, but were made to struggle in the face of some good, tight bowling from Jonny Barrett who took three for 22 and an equally impressive display from Mark White who ended the afternoon with two for 10.

Ellon can take heart from its performance against the champions and can look forward to its first home game with some confidence on Saturday when they meet Aberdeen Grammar who launched its campaign with a four wicket win at Rubislaw against ACE Mannofield.

Ellon Gordon seconds who scratched from its game with Stonehaven 2nds on Saturday are due at Sheddocksley where they meet Grampian 2nds.

Methlick are scheduled to play Banchory at Lairds, while its second eleven are at Kings College where they take on Aberdeen Super Kings.
