Ellon RFC are through to the semi-finals of the BT Caledonia Regional Bowl North after beating Deeside 36-10 at Woodend, Banchory.
The match acted as a double-header for the league and cup, meaning Ellon cemented their lead at the top of BT Caledonia Division 2 North as well as setting themselves up to play one of Peterhead, Ross Sutherland or Aberdeen University in the semis on January 27.
The eventual winner of the regional bowl will go on to play one of the three other regional winners across Scotland for a spot in the National Bowl final played at BT Murrayfield.
Speaking after the result, Ellon 1st XV head coach Sam Mountain said: “We were too excited in the first half, making silly errors in attack trying to force the last pass, when we should be holding onto the ball.
“Our discipline was poor and gave Deeside cheap territory, and to their credit they capitalised on that by scoring the first try.
“Once we were more composed into the second half we found our rhythm and cut loose.
“We knew they would be tough to break down which we eventually did.”
Ellon now have a three- week break as club rugby across the country takes a breather for the Autumn Internationals while clubs with games in hand play rearranged fixtures.
“Players and coaches alike will get a well deserved rest for a week which is required after the amount of work they have put in,” said Mountain.
“Then slowly back building for what will be a massive test in Elgin on December 2.”
