ELLON Gordon Cricket Club hit the heights last week, when not only did the first eleven win the Aberdeenshire Grades 1 title for the first time in the club’s history, but - not to be outdone - the seconds took the Grades 4 title.
These fantastic developments come on the 150th anniversary of the oldest sporting organisation in the town.
Proud president of the Ellon Gordons, Hayden Barrett, spoke of his pride in the side’s achievement.
“To become champions in two leagues in one season is a fantastic achievement,” he said.
“I have represented Ellon Gordon for 38 years and winning the Grades 1 championship is something I have always dreamed of.”
Ean Mackie, another long time stalwart of more years than he would like to admit said: “We have been threatening for years to win the top flight of area cricket. It’s just marvellous.”
Legend of many a century and nearly the same amount of bowling hat-tricks at the Gordon Park, Jonathan Barrett said: “After first playing at the age of eight some 36 years ago this is the pinnacle of my Ellon playing days.
“For us to do something no other Ellon side has done before is just great.”
The celebrations will no doubt go on for the rest of the year, as the impact of the achievement sinks in with the two squads of players.
