A GROUP of 28 Meldrum Academy pupils returned recently from a five-day football development tour to the Spanish Football Association in Madrid.

The highly anticipated tour was organised by school PE teacher, Anne Watson, in collaboration with specialist sports tour provider, inspiresport for pupils of all standards and abilities who have a passion for football.

Speaking about the trip Ms Watson said: “Madrid was the perfect destination, and the facilities at the Spanish FA are first class. The students stayed at the official Spanish FA residence and trained on the superb training grounds, coached by some of the country’s best youth coaches.

“They also had the opportunity to play several matches against Spanish opposition and we worked together with Fraserburgh Academy, who were also visiting, to make up 11-a-side teams”.

Pupils also had the opportunity to visit Madrid’s magnificent Bernabeu Stadium as well as touring the beautiful city of Madrid itself.

Ms Watson said the highlight was the Real Madrid versus Tottenham Hotspur Champions League match. She added: “The atmosphere was incredible, and the pupils got to see all the big stars in action”.

Tom Shorey, Managing Director for inspiresport said: “I was so pleased that Meldrum Academy were able to experience an inspiresport development tour and that they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“I truly believe that our sporting development tours play positive role in a young person’s education, offering not only a top class sporting experience but also providing a well rounded cultural trip, the memories of which will last a lifetime. Our main objective has always been to make a difference to young people’s lives through providing unique access for all standards of players to the top domestic and international clubs across the world”.
