United take valuable points against Stoneywood

ELLON United picked up another valuable three points with a 3-2 away win over a high-flying FC Stoneywood outfit which had strung together an impressive set of results.

The match was played in atrocious weather with the difficult underfoot conditions making life awkward all round. Euan Moffat returned between the sticks for United, but with Scott Clark injured, Ryan Petrie had once again to change his defensive line up.

The visitors got off to a bad start and found themselves a goal down after only three minutes when Chris Allsop slipped, allowing Stoneywood’s Farmer to run through unchallenged to open the scoring. Fortunately for United, they managed to bounce back immediately, and were all square within a minute of going behind.

Keith Walker and Ross Forsyth linked up to feed Martin Foy, who drifted into the middle past his marker to slot the ball into keeper Marwick’s bottom left hand corner.

Both sides rode their luck on occasion in the conditions. Marwick was lucky to see a shot from Chris Craib go behind for a corner after the keeper was unable to hold the ball which squirmed round his post, and at the other end the United defence were put under pressure as Stoneywood made use of the slope on the pitch to throw in some dangerous cross-balls.

It was United who took a 2-1 lead into the interval when Keith Reid rose well to meet a 25th minute free kick from Ross Forsyth to head the visitors in front.

Ellon added to their advantage ten minutes into the second half when Keith Reid beat his marker to the ball and skipped past the defender, who lost his footing as he was wrong-footed with the United striker running on to place the ball beyond Marwick.

Both sides created further opportunities with Ellon holding out until almost the last minute before their defence was finally caught out by a series of wicked in-swinging corners which resulted in Skinner heading home.
